Beef is Canada’s Most Popular Meat.

Canada’s food guide recommends that we eat 2-3 servings per day from the Meat & Alternatives group.  1 serving is 60-90 g. of lean meat.  Beef supplies us with several Major Nutrients:

Protein :

Protein is a body builder.  It builds and repairs body tissues and helps us fight infection.  Protein helps us grow.  It is important to have high quality protein every day.  Protein is made up of small units called amino acids. Beef provides all of the essential amino acids needed by the human body; it is a complete protein.  Vegetable proteins are low in one or more of these units, and are called incomplete proteins.  Protein also builds antibodies, the part of the blood which fights infection.

B Vitamins :

Beef supplies use with thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12.  These are all B vitamins, and are needed to maintain healthy skin, and eyes.  The are used in the release of energy to body cells.  The B vitamins also aid in normal growth and appetite, as well as maintain a normal nervous system and digestive tract.

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A aids in normal bone and tooth development.  It also promotes good vision, and maintains the health of the skin, and membranes.  Vitamin A is found primarily in the organ meats of beef animals.

Iron:

Iron is a mineral, found in Beef, which you need to keep your body healthy.  Iron forms part of the hemoglobin in your red blood cells which carry oxygen throughout your body.  Approximately 23% of the iron consumed in beef is readily absorbed, while only 3-8% of iron consumed from sources such as vegetables, fruits, grains, and eggs is readily absorbed.

Too little iron in the diet is a common nutritional problem for women and children in Canada.  The best way to meet your iron requirement is by including iron-rich foods in your diet.

Zinc:

Beef is an excellent source of zinc which is necessary for the release of energy in our bodies.  Zinc is also necessary for making cells.

Phosphorus:

The phosphorus that we receive from eating beef helps us make strong bones and teeth.

Beef brings vital nutrients into our diet which are readily digested by our body.
